How long has this been here?
Cable TV sticker in apartment building front window, Vancouver, BC |
Wow! I can get actual "multi channel television" if I live in this apartment building.
At one point this was probably a strong selling point for the building. (And cable companies offered a bulk rate for apartment buildings to hook up every suite with cable.)
Canada has traditionally had one of the highest rates of cable penetration in the world. Cable television provided access to the US stations that your rooftop antenna could not pull in.
But today cable's monopoly on out-of-market television has been eliminated by the telephone companies, satellite companies, and streaming video. And of course all of that variety begs the question; does anyone know what cablevision is anymore? (In fact today in Canada it is a cable television company that serves the Abitibi-Témiscamingue area of Quebec and a few towns in Ontario. Oh, and it is owned by Bell, the big telephone company.)
